KELWIN AND Zaree dismounted their horses just out of sight within the forest above the castle, then tied them to a tree branch. They’d be safe enough there, or at least as safe as was possible.

“I don’t hear a crowd,” Zaree said, her voice sounding raw. “Arin said they perform executions at sunset.”

Kelwin looked at her for a moment before letting out an expansive sigh. The horses were as old as Arin had said they were, and that, on top of Zaree’s obvious fear of them, had slowed them down. “Tell me what your stones say.”

Zaree’s brow creased. “If someone sees me doing that….”

“I know,” Kelwin said with a nod. “But there’s no one around and I’ll keep watch anyway. I’d just feel better knowing what we’re heading into.”

Zaree looked at him for a long moment before nodding. She took the familiar bag and cloth from her pocket and kneeled down in the dirt while she cast the stones. Kelwin glanced around to make sure no one was approaching, then looked back to see a deep frown settling onto Zaree’s face. “What is it?”

“Things are not as they seem,” she said. “I’m not certain whether that’s good or bad. There’s also the suggestion of an important or fated encounter.”

“If it’s all the same to you, I think I’ll take that as an omen Tasis is still alive,” Kelwin noted as Zaree tucked her stones and the handkerchief back into her pocket. “There’s no reason to believe Tasis couldn’t have done something to save himself, not after what we both saw him do at the inn. Let’s walk down to the castle and see if we can find a guard to chat up.”

“A guard?” Zaree whispered as she followed Kelwin. “Are you insane?”

“Trust me,” Kelwin answered quietly as he pulled up his hood, making sure it was securely in place. When they reached the gates, he stopped in front of the guard who was standing there, looking bored. “Hey, friend, are we too late? I heard the king’s caught the magic user from Inafain.”

The guard laughed, and Kelwin had to remind himself that punching the man would probably be a bad idea. “You are indeed too late, I’m afraid. The guard in the furnace room is young, though. You could probably grease his palm with a little gold to see the body and get a couple of kicks in.”

Kelwin could see Zaree was struggling to keep her composure, so he just nodded and smiled. “I think I’ll do just that,” he told the guard. “Where can I find the furnace room?”

The guard motioned behind him with a vague gesture. “Down by the dungeons. Just head down, no one will stop you. They’re all too busy celebrating.”

“My thanks, friend,” Kelwin said with a nod. “I’ll see if I can send some of the celebration your way, shall I?”

“I wouldn’t say no to a wench if you’ve a mind to talk one into visiting a poor lonely guard,” the man said with a mock salute.
